Honor Society Recognizes Scholarship And Character

Honor Society

The National Honor Society was organized into a club this year so that they could participate in more activities. The main event of the year was the induction of new members and the naming of probationary members. Members are chosen on the basis of leadership, citizenship, scholarship, and service. Officers were: Jean Warner, vice president; Christine Ringer, secretary; Tom Griffiths, president; Patricia R. Roberts, treasurer; and Elaine Creasey, publicity.

Seniors Earned Honors In Various Areas

Christine Ringer was the lucky and honored girl to be the one chosen by her classmates and faculty to be the recipient of the D. A. R. Good Citizen Award. The award was given on the basis of scholarship, dependability, service to the school, leadership, and patriotism. In competition to find the valley winner, Christine took a test and wrote an essay on "A Republic--If You Can Keep It".

Tom Griffiths brought many honors to himself as well as to the school. As a junior he was selected to become a member of the Berg Science Institute. Tom was also honored in a science program at Indiana University during the summer of 1961. Only 60 applications out of 450 were accepted for this seminar. Following this, he was invited to work six weeks in individual research at the Medial Center in Indianapolis.

Patricia Reed Roberts was the senior girl named as the Betty Crocker "Homemaker of Tomorrow". Patty scored highest on the test taken by all the senior girls. She received on Honor Day a Homemaker pin inscribed "The Home is Where the Heart is". Patty's test was submitted in competition with all the school winners in an effort to pick the state winner.

Martin Dooley was the only person in the history of the Western Indiana Conference to receive the scoring champion award for two consecutive years. Marty was the winner in his junior and senior year. He served as captain of the basketball team and played the forward position. Marty has been an active participant in all sports for all of his high school years.

Eight seniors were selected to initiate the Cadet Teaching Program the second semester. It was a thrill for them to be in the elementary rooms one hour a day to work with the children and their teachers. It was a good "professional" beginning for Sandy Robling, Charles Robertson, Pat R. Roberts, Pat C. Roberts, Barbara Williams, Sharon Lemaire, Chris Ringer, and Bessie Jones. All will enter teacher training programs next fall.
